Do you think they ever actually got a witch? I mean, I'm assuming magic was actually a thing back then, it didn't just pop into existence in the last fifty year or something.

No. It was mostly old women and men who owned land other people wanted. Or possibly fungus. I'd need to dive into Amanda or Wanda's occult libraries to be sure but I believe actual witches were harder to burn alive.

Shockingly, magic users generally burn as easily as the rest of us, my dear. (Though they might, in general, be harder to catch.)
